My eyes fluttered open allowing the light to enter. Stabbing pain erupted in my head as I had the worst hangover Iâd had in a long time. Reaching for the bottle of Advil, I quickly downed several with a gulp of water. Iâd fallen asleep wearing the clothes Iâd had on last night. My top was still sticky from the vomit. I whipped it over my head and tossed it into the clothes basket.
After taking a long shower, I felt better. I swathed a huge blue towel around my wet hair and stepped from the bathroom.
Hearing the doorbell rang with insistence, I wrapped a plush pink robe around myself.
âHold on, Iâm coming!â I wondered who the hell it could be at this early hour on a Saturday morning. Maybe it was a delivery driver with the wrong address. My neighbor was constantly ordering packages on a daily basis. Seeing as she was unemployed, I wondered how she was possibly able to afford all those large seemingly heavy packages.
Not that it was any of my business.
I unlatched the door from the frame and instantly found myself face to face with a red faced Damien.
âWhat the hell are you doing here?â I demanded with my hands on my hips.
âNice greeting. You talk to all your boyfriends like that?â He pushed past me into the house.
âAgain, Iâm asking you. Why are you here? Why is your face so red?â
He rubbed the back of his neck. âI ran up the hill.â
âWhy?â I was genuinely puzzled. I hadnât seen him in months and now here he was even after Iâd told him it was over.
âIâve been running, you know, working out. You remember what a workout is, donât you? Or have you been too busy fucking Dirk or whatever his name is.â
I glanced at him to see that he was indeed wearing a pair of dark blue sweatpants and a t-shirt.
Before I could utter a word, he strolled over to the kitchen and pulled a bottle of water from the refrigerator. He downed several swallows before looking back at me. âYou look like shit. Do you have the flu?â
âThanks,â I said dryly. âYou still didnât answer me. Why are you here?â
âI was just in the neighborhood on my run and thought Iâd stop by. Just paying my old friend a visit.â He grinned at me still looking handsome even when sweaty.
âIâd hardly call us âold friendsâ, Damien. Iâm your ex-girlfriend, or mistress I suppose wouldâve been a better word for me. I told you before I didnât want you here. Now please leave.â
He smirked at me then finished his water. Damien then took the water bottle and very deliberately let it hang over the recycle bin several moments before dropping it inside. âThank you for the water,â he said before turning to leave.
âPlease donât come back.â I whispered incredulous that he simply came by for a drink of water. There were only a million other places he couldâve done that, but I suppose that was the point.
